Mid-Century Modern G-Plan 'Astro' Oval Coffee Table, Teak, circa 1960
G Plan 'Astro' coffee table. Measure: W-48 ins.
This iconic table, designed by Victor Wilkins for G Plan in 1960, is an emblem of the time, the world’s entry into the Space Age.
Constructed in Afromasia teak; with glass insert.
When the years of rationing in production and consumption came to an end in 1952, Donald Gomme was determined to seize the opportunity and meet the pent-up demand for more modern aesthetics. He started G Plan in 1953 as an offshoot of his family business, E. Gomme Ltd., forever changing the image of the British mid-century design scene.
G Plan was a revolutionary concept that offered high-quality, modernist furniture with a distinctively British touch. G Plan furniture spoke to a progressive audience navigating the perplexing task of homemaking [after the devastation of the Second World War and the years of austerity that followed in Great Britain]. (see the British website, Venterior, History of G Plan Furniture, March 23, 2020).
